Response to the Arizona Law Becomes Even More Disturbing
Wednesday, June 23, 2010

The response from our President and other leaders to the new Arizona immigration law grows more disturbing by the day.  Remember the facts of this case; border security in Arizona is barely functional.  The all-out war between Mexican drug cartels and the government is increasingly spilling over the border.  In March rancher Robert Krentz was murdered while out repairing fences and water lines.  Last week we learned that the US Fish and Wildlife Service closed a 3,500 acre section of Arizona parkland to American citizens due to unchecked and heavily armed drug smugglers and human traffickers. Mexican drug cartels have even created a system of permanent lookouts on US soil to monitor law enforcement and help traffickers move freely.

In this broken environment, the State of Arizona passed a law giving new powers to law enforcement to deal with illegal immigration since the Federal Government has been unwilling or unable to enforce its own laws. In response, Mexican President Calderon gave an address to a joint session of Congress where he attacked the law as racist; and received a standing ovation from Democrats! (Watch the video) The Obama administration has been on the attack since the law was passed, although Attorney General Eric Holder and former Arizona Governor and current head of Homeland Security (responsible for border enforcement) Janet Napolitano both admitted they hadn’t read the law!

In fact, in a telling exchange on Fox News, State Department spokesman PJ Crowley admits that he hasn’t bothered to read the 10-page law while defending the State Department’s decision to use it in discussions with China about human rights. (Watch the video) China! Our own State Department, tasked with pressuring the Chinese government on real human rights issues, effectively told them everything is fine- we have trouble too, look at those racists in Arizona!

It wasn’t until June 3rd that the President finally gave in to widespread criticism and agreed to even speak with Arizona Governor Jan Brewer. At that meeting he committed to send administration officials to the state within two weeks with details of plans to secure the border. Those two weeks were up on June 17th, and no signs of a plan.

Now the White House and Arizona Senator Jon Kyl are trading accusations over what transpired during a private meeting last week between the President and the Senator. During the meeting Obama allegedly told Kyle that he won’t do anything more to improve border security, because it would jeopardize his ability to pass a ‘comprehensive’ immigration reform bill.

The war between Arizona and the Obama administration is heating up now, after Secretary of State HIllary Clinton announced last week that the administration will definitely be filing a lawsuit to block the bill. Not in a letter to State officials. Not in a press conference in Washington. No, in an interview with a Ecuadorean television station she said “President Obama has spoken out against the law because he thinks that the federal government should be determining immigration policy, and the Justice Department, under his direction, will be bringing a lawsuit against the act." The Justice Department later confirmed plans to bring suit.

And once again, Mexico is intervening! Today the Mexican government filed a brief in federal court in Arizona asking that the law be declared unconstitutional.

The political grandstanding around the Arizona law has gotten out of hand. Our border security is severely compromised, existing immigration law at the federal level is routinely ignored, and the President seems willing to use security as a bargaining chip to advance his own agenda. Intervention by the Mexican government has not only been tolerated, but encouraged by lawmakers in Washington. This is one more reason why we must Retake the House in November. Help us spread the word- each and every district matters, and every Democrat in the House should be made to fear for their reelection!
